Yocto Project Summit was a three-day virtual event from December 3 to 5, 2024. Like every year, around 300 participants were gathered, ready to share and discuss their practices in using embedded Linux and the Yocto Project.
The Ygreky/Syslinbit extended team delivered two talks; their slides are available below. Videos will follow in the next weeks.
YGREKY_YDD202412_VirtualLab_v3“A DevOps journey using the Yocto Project: How we have set up a learning environment with CephFS, shared sstate and a horde of virtual machines”
We wanted to create a virtual learning environment for Yocto Project-based classes, without spending the first day of a class setting up participants’ machines. This work resulted in the Virtual Lab project https://gitlab.com/syslinbit/public/virtuallabs
We shared the experience of running a live class: CephFS performing well and allowing us to add disk space with a few commands; we also gained suggestions on how to deal with our issues with shared sstate.
Stay tuned for updates!
VirtualLab is now used in the Embedded Security course: https://ygreky.com/2024/09/embedded-security/
YGREKY_YDD202412_Security_updates_styhead“Security improvements in styhead”
The environment has changed in the last year for embedded products: the CRA (Cyber Resilience Act) has been published, and NVD (National Vulnerability Database) issues have continued for nearly a year.
During that time, security work on the Yocto Project continued. We have worked on tooling for CVE checking (vex.bbclass has already been merged, and the tooling is available at https://gitlab.com/syslinbit/public/yocto-vex-check). Poky received a warning message stating it was not for production, and the “debug-tweaks” option had been removed.
There is also a long list of ideas for improvements for the next year…
The talk caused a long discussion in the chat on the future of the “Poky” distro…
